POWER

"Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand".

It is definitely time to change, it is easy to remember all these times that i was studying and thinking "what a waste of time" or "when am i going to use this"...If students feel they can apply to their lives what they are studying, motivation to learn will likely increase!
PBL is a dynamic approach of teaching where students explore real world experiences while developing skills by cooperating with other students and the teacher. In this new way of teaching, students are evaluated on the basis of their projects rather than exams. Students are involved in projects and exposed to technology such as computers, GPS, video cameras....

"Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand" The more I read about "new ways of teaching" the more certain I am about the direction to take in the classroom. Infants begin to make sense of the world by inquiring. They use their senses: seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling to gather information. As students get older, they inquire less what results in less knowledge gathered. After all, it is the nature of humans to inquire, and it is easy to understand that effective inquiry is a great way to learn and to convert data and information into useful knowledge that can be applied to real-world issues outside the classroom.

PBL in Sports

2-Think about a PBL lesson you experienced while you were a student or Instructor.

To my understanding PBL can ultimately be related to any area of teaching. When i am teaching tennis, i focus on the solution of the problem. After knowing the student, i usually guide the student to find a solution for the problem that occurs, instead of just telling what the correction is. I have come to find that this way i am getting a lot more feedback from them and that they feel more involved (motivated) in the lesson. Since tennis is a individual sport, athletes should develop skills that allow them to overcome the problem that occurs ( tennis match is full of emotional ups and downs and technical problems especially at lower levels). "Sage on a stage" (mentioned by Scott Hill) should be avoided and guide on the side should be emphasized during practice. This concept will allow the student the ability to find where the problem is and also find what the solution is to overcome the problem.

A note on PBL

What is PBL?

PBL is learner centered. PBL is problem or task oriented and it is an authentic assessment. The goals of PBL are:

· to develop expertise,

· to improve research skills

· to improve higher-order thinking skills

· to participate and engage in a project

· to learn to use IT

· to conduct self-assessment and peer assessment

· to develop a portfolio

· to be part of a scholar community,

· to work on important ideas

As I read through the notes of my peers, I think about how this can be related to my area of teaching (tennis). Still trying to understand to what extent PBL can be applied. I missed the first class and i am uncertain of what this material covers. I believe that when the teacher provides the student to participate directly in the activities and allows feedback, the learning environment is enhanced and the student stays motivated. The student needs to feel he/she is the reason why this activity is being done with and it has the purpose of improving their skills.

P/T Team

The interaction/cooperation between students under guidance of the instructor is a great way of learning and improving skills. The length of a project can be short or long. The final goal is obviously to finish the project; however there are many tasks along the way to accomplish until the final project is concluded. The project involves the accomplishment of intermediate goals (tasks and solving problems), with the final goal of finishing the project.

Does this seem like an important idea?

Yes it is a very important concept.Cooperation between students and guidance on the side by the instructer will help students to be motivated along the way until the project is concluded.

How would you convince a parent or a school board member that this is an important idea in education?

I would show them examples based on research where learning was enhanced by using this concept.

Im trying to see how this works...!!!
