A note on PBL

What is PBL?

PBL is learner centered. PBL is problem or task oriented and it is an authentic assessment. The goals of PBL are:

· to develop expertise,

· to improve research skills

· to improve higher-order thinking skills

· to participate and engage in a project

· to learn to use IT

· to conduct self-assessment and peer assessment

· to develop a portfolio

· to be part of a scholar community,

· to work on important ideas

As I read through the notes of my peers, I think about how this can be related to my area of teaching (tennis). Still trying to understand to what extent PBL can be applied. I missed the first class and i am uncertain of what this material covers. I believe that when the teacher provides the student to participate directly in the activities and allows feedback, the learning environment is enhanced and the student stays motivated. The student needs to feel he/she is the reason why this activity is being done with and it has the purpose of improving their skills.

P/T Team

The interaction/cooperation between students under guidance of the instructor is a great way of learning and improving skills. The length of a project can be short or long. The final goal is obviously to finish the project; however there are many tasks along the way to accomplish until the final project is concluded. The project involves the accomplishment of intermediate goals (tasks and solving problems), with the final goal of finishing the project.

Does this seem like an important idea?

Yes it is a very important concept.Cooperation between students and guidance on the side by the instructer will help students to be motivated along the way until the project is concluded.

How would you convince a parent or a school board member that this is an important idea in education?

I would show them examples based on research where learning was enhanced by using this concept.
